A38 as a multicultural meeting point

Sándor Kozlov

A38 Ship in Budapest is a music and multicultural venue in the center of the city which opened its gates in year 2003. First of all it was aimed to be the best music venue of the city with leading opportunities for performances - first of all for music bands to play on the stage of the A38 and since then we had a lot of famous internationals acts and we had almost the most important and most famous Hungarian music bands playing here but we have also the cultural idea to promote and to help the unknown bands as well so a lot of not so famous bands are also playing here at A38. Our main activity is music, but our venue also has a first class restaurant, we also have a new exhibition hall that opens its doors in November 2010. That means that this music venue became not only place for lovers of music but also a multicultural meeting point which has an aim on promotion of independent culture, contemporary arts, contemporary music.

The idea came actually from Paris in 2001- when we saw a place called Bateau Phare which is also a club on the river and we decided to realize the same idea here in Budapest. Then we found a shipwreck in Ukraine, which was in ex-Soviet union. It was a ship which was built in 1968 and the original name of the ship was Tripolia, but the type of the ship was Artemovszk 38 and shortly it’s the A38. The renovating and rebuilding works took place in Slovakia, in the city of Kosice. In year 2003 we opened the gates of the club. Why did we choose a ship for hosting a music venue? The water and Danube itself is a very important part of the life of Budapest. We – Hungarians - are very famous in water sports, for exmaple water polo, swimming and canoe swimming. Also Danube plays a very important transportation role in Hungary and actually it divides the city too. Before the 19th century Budapest was two different cities. And Budapest is also the city of thermal spas. We have one of the most beautiful thermal bathes here in Budapest and that attracts a lot of tourists. So in general the water culture and the Danube as a river plays a very important role in our city life. But there was no music on the river, so we decided to put the music on the river. And now we have the boat and the water is going under us and we try to bring the music into the city, into the river life, into the water life.
