Sources of income of A38

Sándor Kozlov

A38 is a privately owned company so it's completely in private hands, but at the same time, as we are dealing with the culture and the cultural activity, we are also a nonprofit organization. That means that despite of the fact that we are absolutely private company, we are taking part in lot of cultural activities and we are also utilizing grants from the Hungarian state, from the City council, from the district, where we are located and we are also taking part in some European Union´s grants. For example, our new building - the exhibition hall that was opened in November 2010. It's a new float linked to the right side of the original ship. The 80 % of the budget with which it was built was from European Union's grants.

We're also trying to make our activity much broader but today, in the days of the crisis it's becoming much harder. People cannot afford high prices for the tickets and we don't want them to pay high prices for the tickets. But at the same time, we want to have best bands from abroad and from our country to play. That's why it is very important to have these kinds of grants and these kinds of support from the city, from the grants of the European Union, from the state grants. Otherwise you cannot realize the biggest ideas. Of course we do some profiting from the biggest concerts but from the smaller concerts we are almost always in minus. And of course as in all places we earn on the income from the bar, from the restaurant that we have and all these incomes make the joined income that keeps the ship floating. But at the same time it's very important to have other kind of grants, other kind of support because without this help we actually could not exist. And especially nowadays - when there is a crisis the culture suffers a lot. And not the academic culture, but the underground and the independent culture so we're trying all the way to keep arising as it was and make the culture affordable. That's why it is a very big and important mission for us to keep this balance of profit and non-profit parts of our activity.
