Regeneration of the Jakominiviertel in Graz

Creative Industries Styria has been also working to develop the Jakomini quarter in Graz. We made a public call for instalations in public space, which was won by a very simple and effective idea to paint the street red to resemble an athletic tarmac stadium. This has highlighted the area and drawn attention to it. Twenty young creative companies have set up their businesses there. The area has gone through an economic collapse, now life is slowly returning to it. Our project has been running for one year now and we plan to continue it for another two years. We now have thirty creative companies and individuals who are interested in setting up their businesses and studios there. The idea of the project is to support production and its presentation through the creation of spaces for studios and workshops. One effect of this has been that the rents have started going up in the area. However, this is an indication that the area is becoming more attractive and that life is gradually returning to a neglected part of town.
