Social dimensions of the Graz 2003

We tried to put on a programme for everybody; whether you’re interested in dance, fine arts or the opera, there was always something for you in Graz at any point in the year and especially in the public spaces of the city. We also tackled more difficult themes and set up social projects, such as the Homeless Street Football World Cup. Different nations sent their players to Graz, the championship was played right in front of the City Hall. All the players in the Austrian team were immigrants from African countries. To start with, there was lots of scepticism about the championship and its location in front of the City Hall, but it turned into a really fantastic event. All the Austrian on-lookers started to passionately support their team, which went on to win the championship. All the homeless players, the African immigrants who came to Austria, some of them still without a legal status, were playing football for Austria.
