Measuring not only economic impact

Johanna Skantze

Measuring the creative industries is a very tricky thing. I think you have to measure not only economic impact (number of created jobs, turnover of companies within these industries) but also social and cultural values that the culture and creative industries bring with them. I have followed the discussion about defining the culture and creative industries and it is important because defining this term obviously help us put numbers on the non-economic values. However, in order to enable growth within these industries and to enable cities to benefit from the culture and creative industries we also need to look on these values and start doing things. For example in several regions in Sweden the “crowdculture” method (platform that allows private individuals to invest a small monthly sum in any local project) is being implemented in order to fund smaller initiatives within the culture and creative industries. I mean, we can´t be sure what that will bring but at least they are doing something and when we start doing things - when companies start collaborating, when we as regional developers or policymakers start speaking to each other on a friendly basis - I think that is the best condition for the things to start happening.
