Culture policy in Russia

Asya Filippova

In general the situation is that centres like Proekt_Fabrika do not have any funding from foundations or from sponsors and this is the main problem. We have to survive and run everything by ourselves. Nobody says “thank you” for our cultural projects, so mainly we are doing it just because it is important for us and we are satisfied with it. So this is the main challenge, to survive without any support from outside. On the other hand, it makes us totally independent. However, sometimes it is difficult knowing that there is no safety net. Another challenge is that Moscow is a very big city and sometimes it is difficult to attract the audience because hundreds of events take place in Moscow every evening. To find audience is a challenge. One of the factors of our success is that we managed to find the audience which is interested in cultural content. The center became quite popular among students, artists, journalists and media. We managed to make a cultural program of exhibitions which are not commercial but really interesting from the cultural point of view. If you are running a cultural center, you have to keep inventing something new all the time, think today about what new you can invent tomorrow.
