Transformation of Liverpool’s cultural institutions

Beatriz Garcia

One of the most important effects of hosting the European Capital of Culture year in Liverpool was the way it changed the way cultural organisations relate to one another. A new network of art organisations called the Liverpool Arts Regeneration Consortium was established. It operates today as a platform to provide one voice for the major art organisations in the city and with this an opportunity for them to be in direct communication with the local authorities, with potentional investors, with city planners, the police, and others within Liverpool who could benefit from establishing links with the art and culture sectors. It will be interesting to see how the experience of hosting the European Capital of Culture year has changed the ways strategy is developed in the city. The new platforms that were established to get things going over a specific timeframe have continued to be active in 2009 and 2010. This change in the strategic thinking of key stakeholders can already be considered to be an interesting legacy. It will be interesting to see if this lasts in the medium and long terms.
