Concept of Creative Industries

Tom Fleming

The concept of creative industries is a policy construct. It’s a way to describe a lot of different activities which have creativity at their core – such as the arts, fashion, design, music, film, all of the things that you perhaps see as culture. What describing them in this way does, is that it explores them as a critical part of the economy. It indicates that apart from being socially important, they also have an importance for the economy. My job as a consultant is to describe what their importance is in different cities and to explore how they can be supported and how different types of value (economic, social, cultural) can be developed from them.
