Umbrella model

Asya Filippova

Our center represents the model of an umbrella center. We do not have any funding from foundations or from the state. We have to get the money to pay our bills ourselves. That is why we have two halves of the factory. We rent one half for commercial purposes - for offices, storages and things like that, and another half is mostly used for creative industries as studios and cultural spaces. So we get the money from renting our spaces and then we spend part of it for cultural projects that we present to the public. I think this model of existence is quite popular in Russia. As far as I know, cultural centers in Moscow use more or less the same model. However, our center is specific because it is a factory that still works, that produces paper. When I came here it was like a big industrial factory, it produced a lot of kinds of paper but unfortunately economical situation was quite difficult. I had to make a decision about the way of life of the factory in future. I decided to reduce this range of papers and now we produce just one kind of paper but with a good profit fortunately and we rent out the spaces and it helps us to live.
